It's important to remember that after the infamous Adirondack Guides who have gone down in local history (Phelps, French Louie, Noah John Rondeau), others most certainly have endured in our own time, carving their own unique paths as stewards of the Adirondack mountains. This wonderful book does just that, encompassing the guiding life of James Goodwin who began his guiding career in 1921 at age 11. He guided initially in the Adirondacks where he took summer residents of the community up the local mountains and cut trails for others to use. Goodwin's life from a very young age revolved around the outdoor experience in various ways: rock climbing, skiing, mountaineering, and combat medic with the 10th Mountain Division during WWII. This books reflects that love for and intense involvement in guiding.
