The 4th Annual Great
Adirondack Trail Run
***Registration for the 11.5
Mile Run is FULL***
The Mountaineer is proud to announce that we have received permits from NY State
and the Town of Keene as well as permission from all the private land
owners en route for the fourth Great Adirondack Trail Run on June 21st,
2008 in Keene Valley, NY.
This charity event supports the Au
Sable and Bouquet River Associations,
provides an educational opportunity for children and adults about our
sensitive river ecosystems and gives our guests and locals alike a chance
to enjoy the mountains, get some exercise and celebrate the spring and
black fly season before the summer arrives and the trails get busy.
There are two runs: an 11.5 mile strenuous run (2900' of vertical gain and
3100' of loss) up the back side of Hopkins Mountain and down to Keene
Valley via the private roads off of Beede Rd, and a 3.5 mile fun run from
Baxter Mountain Tavern to Keene Valley. The 11.5 mile run starts on
private land, and the entire final portion in Keene Valley is on private
land. Registration has been severely limited and runners will be
individually staggered out of respect for the public trail portion of the
run. The 3.5 mile fun run is entirely on private land. All trail runners,
hikers and walkers, young and old, are welcome to enjoy this event. Both
runs are self-supported, with no aid stations--runners are responsible for
staying on course and carrying what they need to complete the runs.
The Mountaineer is grateful to the state of New York and to the private
land owners for allowing us to host this event. Our small hamlet is
surrounded by state land and this charity run would not be possible
without venturing onto such land, which encompasses 70% of the town of
Keene.
All runners and hikers must be pre-registered
for the 11.5 mile run, while 3.5 milers can sign up at any time.
We hope you will join us in supporting these two grassroots environmental
groups.
Sponsors Patagonia, Salomon, Montrail, La Sportiva, Julbo, Darn Tough
Socks, Nathan HPL, Trail Runner
Magazine and Lake Placid Pub & Brewery will donate prizes for the top runners as well as great booty for
all participants. Everyone gets a T-shirt, too! All proceeds from the
event will benefit the Ausable and Bouquet River Associations.
The main event will begin at 9 AM, with runners starting one at a time in
a staggered format (one per minute). The fun run will begin at 10 AM from
the Baxter Mountain Tavern on Rte 9N between Keene and Elizabethtown. A
shuttle will be available from the parking/finish area at Riverside in
Keene Valley to the trailhead for both runs. Come for the run, stay for
the festivities! There will be a celebration of Spring with great food,
beer, raffles and more starting at 11 AM, with awards at 2 PM.
Rules: This is a wilderness trail run. There will be no
support--participants are on their own from start to finish, and will need
their own water, food and all other supplies. Any volunteers stationed on
the course will be there to make sure runners take the right trail--they
will not have water, food, moleskin, etc. We are privileged to be allowed
to hold the race on such a wonderful course, and we need to respect that
this is a wilderness area. Anyone caught littering will be immediately
disqualified; if you drop an energy packet by accident, pick it up. Our
permission to hold this run rests on the behavior of the runners: please
take it upon yourself to leave no trace.
