The 2018 Mountaineer Fly Fishing Gear Guide

The Mountaineer Fly Fishing Gear Guide 2018

The Mountaineers Fly Fishing Department Manager Mike “Kaz” Kazmierczak LOVES fly fishing and gear as much as the next angler. In anticipation of warmer weather and opening day on April 1st- we asked Kaz to put together a short list of his favorites for the upcoming season. Without further ado, the 2018 Mountaineer Fly Fishing Gear Guide!

1.) Middle Fork Packable Waders

◊Patagonia Fly Fishing
These go-anywhere waders roll down into their own compact 8″ x 13″ stuffsack and weigh in at just 26 ounce! Don’t let the light weight fool you- these revolutionary waders are built to last, with heavy-duty scuff guards, strong and stretchy seamless rubber booties, and a waterproof/breathable fabric.  These waders would be a great option for the travelling angler or back country angler where space and weight savings are important.

2.) Thunderhead Submersible Lumbar

Fishpond’s latest creation…a fully waterproof and super comfortable waist pack. For the Angler who likes to use a waist pack, but are fed up with their gear inside getting wet when they wade into deeper water…here is your answer. Another IFTD Award winning design from Fishpond!

3.) Native Flip

◊Fishpond & Chaco
You gotta have a comfy pair of flip flops to get to and from the river. Fishpond and Chaco put their expertise together to bring you a reliable and comfortable sandal with a unique, limited edition patterned webbing.  These flips certainly don’t flop on material! Vibram Megagrip out soles will keep you upright in slippery conditions. And, for every pair sold, $2.50 is donated to Western Rivers Conservancy! Not too shabby. Come Grab a pair at the shop this Spring.

4.) Redington i.D Fly Reel

This reel is perhaps the most “fun” product of the bunch. It features a flat back surface that a wide variety of fun stickers can be applied to. On top of that it is a great reel  for any freshwater situation. We have the new i.D. reels in stock come check them out, grab decal and personalize your i.D reel today!

5.) Rio-Fishpond Headgate

 ◊Rio and Fishpod
Another strong team up, this time between Fishpond and RIO. This bundle includes 5, 30 yard spools of RIO’s Powerflex tippet (2x-6x) on Fishpond’s Headgate tippet dispenser. This is a ready-to-hit-the-water configuration that we are psyched to have on our shelves for you.

6.) Rush Light Galvan Fly Reel

◊Galvan Fly Reels

This high value, honestly priced, large arbor reel is a reel triple threat. Originally constructed in 2005 it quickly became a popular choice among anglers. Galvan went back to the drawing board in 2012 and reduced it’s weight, sharpened the appearance all while making sure to maintain a rugged durable construction. The perfect blend. This is Kaz’s favorite reel.

7.) Super-Dri Streamer Float

Kaz’s favorite line, (as he’s a bit fanatical about streamer fishing) the Streamer Float is functionally built for hucking big streamers and it works really well for bass/pike flies as well! Features include aggressive taper to help turn over heavy and wind resistant flies at any distance. Not sure you can cast it…Free fly casting clinics every Wednesday in August, 7-8pm at the Keene Valley Lodge here in beautiful Keene Valley. Hope to see you there!

8.) Fresh Pants

◊Loon Outdoors
Stinky waders? No more! Fresh Pants kills odor-causing bacteria to clean, deodorize and sanitize waders, wet suits, tents, gloves, life jackets, spray skirts, etc. Loon even swears it’s safe enough to use as body spray/ deodorant. Two birds, one stone!

9.) Stoic Insulated Barrel Mug

◊Loon Outdoors
For your pre-river coffee or end of the day cold brew or both! This barrel mug is double wall insulated, made of stainless steel, and has an awesome graphic. Cheers!
