Jeremy’s Jay Range Adventure – June 2014

The summer hiking season in the High Peaks region can be a busy one. Our customers are always eager for information on hikes that are ” off the beaten path.” Jeremy recently checked out the new trail to Jay Mountain and enjoyed near solitude and sunny skies, with beautiful 360 degree views of Whiteface Mountain and the surrounding peaks. The hike also gave Jeremy a chance to test out some La Sportiva Omega boots (also available in a women’s model), which performed great in the mud (it’s inevitable in the Adirondacks), provided great grip on the open rock sections and offered the comfort of a “heavy duty sneaker.” A low-profile toe made easy work of more technical sections on the trail. According to Jeremy, this boot fits best for those with medium to wide feet.

The Jay Mountain trailhead is located at the intersection of Jay Mountain Road and Upland Meadows Road in the town of Jay. A 2.5 mile newly-constructed trail leads to an open ridgeline, which is a destination in itself. Hikers can continue along the mostly open ridge (following prominent rock cairns) for another 1.5 miles to the 3,600 foot summit of Jay Mountain.
